Product Description:
This antique Swedish Mora clock carries the date 1843 painted directly into its original decoration, placing it firmly in the mid-19th century peak of Mora clockmaking. The case is hand-painted with floral motifs across the body, a folk art tradition that drew on the everyday plant life of the Dalarna countryside and varied from household to household depending on what the original owner could afford and what the local painter favored that season.
The clock retains its original 7-day, two-weight pendulum mechanism, with an hourly bell chime, and is in full working order — wind it once a week and it keeps time the same way it has since 1843. At 198cm (78") tall, with a width of 55cm (21.7") and depth of 22cm (8.7"), it sits comfortably in most hallways and stairwells without needing a particularly wide space.
We source our Mora clocks directly from Swedish estates and ship worldwide, including to the USA with a custom-built crate, full insurance, and door-to-door delivery (2–3 week transit, $600 all-in).
Why a dated Mora clock matters to collectors
A great deal of the Mora clock market is undated and unattributed, which makes any clock with a legible year — like this one, dated 1843 — more useful to collectors building a chronological sense of the style's evolution, and generally a safer bet on authenticity than an undated example.
About this style of Mora Clock
Floral painted Mora Clocks from the mid-19th century are a wonderful expression of Swedish folk art, with hand painted botanical motifs that reflect the natural beauty of the Swedish countryside.
Mora Clock Set-Up
The setting up of a Mora Clock is relatively straightforward and we provide a set of instructions with the clock. Essentially the weights are hung at the end of the 2 chains/cords and the pendulum is attached. By swinging the pendulum the clock would then start. The mechanisms are 7 day working mechanisms which means that the Mora Clock should be rewound one per week.
